About Umeå
Umeå, often called the City of Birches, is located by the Ume River about 15 km from the sea. With 118 349 inhabitants, Umeå is one of Sweden’s fastest growing cities.
Umeå is growing like never before. In fact, the city is in its most expansive phase ever. Umeå will double its population in less than 50 years, which means that a major development will take place. The overall strategy is to build next to the buildings that exist today, to create a dense city. This reduces infrastructure costs, and more people can use local transport.
The main features of how Umeå is intended to grow are gathered in six strategies for sustainable growth. One of the strategies includes growth in public transport routes and transformation of traffic routes. The strategy is to plan dense neighborhoods along the lanes that benefit public transport in the best way. Umeå’s growth will also, as far as possible, be concentrated within a radius of five kilometers from the city center or the university area. Umeå will also invest in a high density in new districts. An exploitation with dense mixed-use settlements will support and at the same time support the nearby districts’ range of services.
Something that is also important and part of the six strategies is an investment in public spaces and parks. Umeå emphasizes that in a denser city, public spaces are increasingly important. The public rooms should generally be designed to provide attractive, safe and experience-rich places and lanes with space for recreation and greenery.
To create a sustainable city, Umeå wants to develop the public space so that everyone can stay there on the same terms. All planning must be permeated by openness, democracy and gender equality.
Finally, the municipality plan to complement the city by adding new districts next to older ones. In this way, a greater willingness to invest in the existing property portfolio will be created.
